Astrology is the study of the movements of the planets in our solar system and their effects on the human experience. Each planet represents different aspects of our psyche, personality, or experience.

The five planets closest to and including the Sun are known as the “personal planets” because they describe our basic nature or personality. They are: the Sun – identity, The Moon – emotions, Mercury – voice, Venus – love, and Mars – action.

The next two planets are termed the “social planets” because they tell us how we try to live within our human/social systems. These are Jupiter – spirituality and Saturn – rules.

The outer or “trans-personal planets” are also sometimes referred to as generational planets because their relatively slow movements through the sky affect entire generations in similar ways. These three planets are not visible to the naked eye and therefore were not discovered and included in the astrological equation until 1781 (Uranus), 1846 (Neptune), and 1930 (Pluto). Thus, they are often also referred to as the modern planets.
